EXPLORE THE SPICE ISLANDS
SPICE ISLANDS, RASCAL-STYLE
Snorkel and dive the undersea drop-offs covered in multi-coloured coral gardens home to huge, 3m-wide barrel sponges, some more than 1,500 years old; head to Banda Neira's vibrant fish market and shop for tuna, mackerel and marlin with our head chef who'll then prepare you a special, ocean-freshlunch; for the fit and adventurous, climb the 656m-high, still-active Gunung Api Volcano - which last erupted in 1988 and whose lava are still clearly visible; pay a visit to the traditional village of Ameth - with special permission granted from the local king.
WILDLIFE HIGHLIGHT: HAMMERHEAD SHARKS
One of the newer-evolved shark species at around 20-25 million years old, the hammerhead is so-named for its distinctively shaped head - known as a cephalofoil - which gives superior all-round vision as well as aiding navigation and maximising the shark's ability to find prey. They'll even use their heads to ram and pin down their favourite meal: sting rays. Hammerheads aren't aggressive towards humans and we see shark congregation in their hundreds in the Banda Sea every year between September and November.
SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE: SPICEWORLD
Take an immersive trip back in time as we learn about the local nutmeg - once hailed as a wonder drug with aphrodisiacal and hallucinogenic powers. You'll be able to pick your own spices at a nutmeg plantation, where we'll enjoy a breakfast complete with mace jam, spiced pastries and iced cinnamon tea. Finally, we en the day with a pop-up dinner under the stars on top of Fort Belgica (built by the Dutch in 1611 in their efforts to control the so-called Spice Race), which boasts spectacular views of the surrounding islands and volcanoes.
